Starving-Student Tips: Christmas Events - Denver Edition

Ah, the holiday season! Family, presents, decorations... it is a wonderful time of year. Unfortunately, as most of us know, it can also be a very expensive time of year. This is especially true as college student with little to no wiggle room in the budget.

Fortunately, you can still enjoy the season by grabbing some friends and family and enjoying the abundance of holiday activities that Denver has to offer for little to no money!

Parade of Lights

This tradition held in the streets of downtown Denver includes marching bands, Christmas lights, and of course, Santa Clause himself. Grab a warm drink, your biggest jacket and your thickest socks. Set up camp somewhere along the route, which circumnavigates the center of Downtown Denver, and enjoy the show!

Cost: Free
When: December 1 at 8 PM, and December 2 at 6 PM.

Ice skating on Evergreen Lake

Ice Skating

This one might involve spending a few extra dollars on gas, but a mere 40-minute drive from downtown Denver will take you to a winter wonderland in Evergreen, Colorado. Split the gas with some friends and go do some ice skating on a mountain lake. Ice skates can be rented for an extra $7.

When: December 21 to January 7.

Georgetown Christmas Market

Georgetown Christmas Market

Here is another one with a bit of a drive, but the Christmas Market in historic Georgetown is a festive experience in a truly unique location that you won’t want to miss. The old-timey Christmas event in this beautiful mountain town includes roasted chestnuts, holiday shopping, and horse-drawn wagon rides. Get a glimpse of what Christmas was like long ago!

Denver Pavilion Carousel

If you find yourself out shopping for some last-minute Christmas presents at the Denver Pavilions, indulge the child inside of you and take a break for a ride on an old-fashioned carousel. This one supports a good cause as well with a portion of proceeds going to the Food Bank of the Rockies.

Cost: $3 per ride or FREE with a voucher from any Denver Pavilions merchant

New Year’s Eve Downtown Fireworks


End the holiday season, and start off the New Year, with a spectacular display of fireworks in downtown Denver. Once again, dress warm, find a good seat, and enjoy he show!
