The CARES Act (also known as the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) is federal legislation which provides a variety of financial support to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act established and funded the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund to provide emergency funding to higher education institutions. A portion of each institution’s allocation must be awarded to students in the form of emergency financial aid grants for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the COVID-19 crisis. Information pertaining to the Student Emergency Grants can be located below.
AdventHealth University signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement to receive $1,126,242 from the Department, provided under the Allocations for Section 18004 (a)(1) of the CARES Act. At least $563,121 must be used for emergency aid to students who have experienced disruption of campus operations due to COVID 19. The Department of Education left the process for determining how to allocate these funds at the discretion of the institution with some guidance.
AdventHealth University chose to have our students apply for the grant funds by filling out an application. The application gathered information on expenses incurred by students as a result of disruptions to campus operations. Students had to be eligible under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and have been enrolled on campus during the Spring 2020 trimester.
As of May 15,2020 the University awarded $563,121 to eligible students.
The application was open from May 1,2020 and closed on May 15,2020.
Of the 979 students eligible under section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to receive Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds grants under Section 18004(a) (1) of the CARES Act, 357 applied, and 319 were awarded.
The funds were awarded on a first come, first serve basis until all funds were depleted.
Awards ranged from $458 to $6200.
