COVID-19: Summer 2021 Trimester Guidelines

Continuation of Hybrid Active Learning at AHU

The top priority of AHU remains the health and safety of students. All plans for the Summer 2021 Trimester follow the AdventHealth and AHU service standards: Keep Me Safe, Love Me, Make It Easy, Own It.

For the Summer 2021 trimester beginning May 10, teaching and learning at AHU will be delivered via a mix of student experiences in safe, secure learning environments:

  • online, distant, and remote classes
  • on-campus labs
  • interactive breakouts
  • on-campus and online simulations
  • experiential, virtual reality courses
  • live standardized patient procedures
  • procedural technique workshops (e.g., labor and delivery)
  • rescue demonstrations (e.g., infant resuscitation)
  • small online discussion groups
  • video-rich active learning

AHU curriculum designers, content producers, professors, and instructors continue to produce new rich content for active learning in carefully planned digital environments and campus settings. Safety precautions on campus include daily health screenings, medical-grade PPE, appropriate social distancing, and frequent cleaning and disinfection by professional environmental services teams.

Throughout the Summer 2021 trimester, May 10 to August 13, the AHU Orlando campus will be open only to faculty and students with assigned Labs and/or Simulations, on the days assigned.

AHU continues to optimize student learning experiences and minimize risk of COVID-19 exposure with a blend of online, remote, distance, on-campus, and clinical learning experiences.

AHU continues to plan for other scenarios as well, including a shift to all remote learning in the event of a resurgence of COVID-19 infections in Florida and/or Colorado.

Community and Volunteer Opportunities

The Office of Community Engagement may continue to share community and volunteer opportunities via email and Students, faculty, and staff may choose to participate in these events at their own risk. AHU does not offer any assurances regarding the safety of these events. AHU does not provide PPE (masks, gloves, gowns) at community and volunteer events. AHU cannot assure that safe social distancing will be maintained at any non-AHU event in the community. Use good judgment and caution when considering opportunities to serve.


  1. On campus: On campus parking is limited to faculty and staff.
  2. North King Street garage: spots will be available to employees and students on the Summer Labs/Simulations list. Follow any posted guidelines.

COVID-19 Testing

  1. Students without clinicals: AHU has no current plans to test students as a requirement to return to campus. If a student has tested positive for COVID-19, a medical professional must approve the student's return to campus.
  2. Students with clinicals: AdventHealth and other clinical sites will test students according to their own policies and schedules.

Summer 2021 Labs and Simulations

Guiding Safety Principles

  1. Only Labs and Simulations that cannot be held remotely to satisfy accreditation may be held on campus.
  2. Require safety procedures for approved on-campus Labs/Sims
    1. Temperature check all individuals; temp of 100+ excludes anyone from entering campus building or attending lab or simulation (use AdventHealth-approved IR scanner, follow with color-coded sticker for the day)

      In Denver, screening questions will be asked per Centura Health requirements

    2. Student group limitations
      1. Small simulation rooms (i.e., GB second floor) no more than 4 individuals, including instructor
      2. Large classrooms and skills labs groups, including instructors, will be determined by COVID-19 capacity standards
      3. Stay with assigned groups in assigned rooms
      4. Cannot congregate in corridors
    3. Requirement for PPE for all in-person activities
      1. Must wear mask (supplied by AHU daily at temperature checkpoint)
      2. Must wear gloves for mannequin/equipment sharing and/or person-to-person contact
      3. Must wear gowns for person-to-person contact
    4. Hand sanitizer will be available; clinical protocols will be followed
    5. Maintain recommended distance between people unless learning requires contact
    6. Disinfect all surfaces between groups per CDC guidelines:
    7. Schedule will accommodate required disinfecting between lab/simulation sessions and more thorough EVS cleaning at least once in 24 hours
    8. Faculty must have plan for students who opt out of in-person due to health risk

Learning Modalities Used for Simulations

  1. Remote Simulation via Zoom. This will be the safest means to conduct simulation for staff, students, and Standardized Patients (SPs). It is the number one recommendation. Limitations include:
    • Limited to (6) rooms available for use.
    • Potential technology issues (connectivity)
    • (3) SPs per room. If there is more than (1) SP in a room, then they will need to wear a mask. The maximum number of people per room (SPs, staff, students) is (4). This is to practice social distancing.
    • All onsite participants will be screened when entering the facility (temperature + mask).
  2. Small Group Simulation Activity. This is being reserved for hands-on skills laboratories required for accreditation. Limitations include:
    • PPE availability (all students + employees)
    • All students + employees will be temperature screened
    • SPs must be in PPE.
    • Social distancing will be practiced. Size of groups in classrooms depends on COVID-19 standards.
    • Each station will be cleaned (per CDC recommendations) between station rotations.
