Our Programs

Laboratory and Research Safety

EHS develops and maintains laboratory safety policies, provides training and guidance to research personnel to assist in compliance with regulations and standards, conduct laboratory safety inspections, assists with the design and renovation of laboratories, and manage laboratory waste streams.

Environmental Protection

The EHS office oversees protection efforts that extend from the offices and classrooms, to the land surrounding the university.

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of university waste streams and proper disposal of hazardous materials
  • Safety guides and plans for topics such as: electrical safety, building hazards safety, machinery-related hazards, evacuation safety, etc
  • Maintaining sanitation and air emissions compliances
  • Encouraging proper ergonomics
Fire and Life Safety

The EHS Office aims to help reduce the risk of fire related events as well as provide safety for students and faculty, on and off campus. This function helps reduce fire risk by having building fire protection systems inspected and tested, conducting fire drills, developing building fire evacuation plans, training employees and students in fire safety, as well as installing, inspecting, and testing portable fire extinguishers.

Emergency Management

The EHS Office assists the university in planning for emergencies by establishing policies, procedure, and outlining responsibilities that are nessessary to effectively respond to an emergency. Emergency Management coordinates the university's response to emergencies, provides support to emergency response personnel, and manages administrative procedures related to emergceny response and recovery. This function also administers the AHU alert emergency messaging system and the automatic external defibrillator program.

Responsibilities:

  • Preventing emergencies from occurring on campus by recommending modifications to facilities, university activities, and procedures.
  • Preparing the university to respond and recover from emergencies through training, exercies, and planning.
  • Responding to events that occur on campus and helping to coordinate response activities through Florida Hospital emergency response and local emergency departments.
  • Assisting the university in recovering from crisis using established plans and procedures to resume university operations as quickly as possible and provide support to those impacted by the event.
