AHU Simulation Center

Our simulation center is located on the second floor of the Graduate Building. Each simulation room contains a specific simulator or simulators and functioning headwalls for suction, “oxygen” and air. Two rooms are focused on pediatrics with one containing a child simulator and one an infant simulator. The two remaining rooms contain adult simulators.

Anatomy and Physiology Lab

The Anatomy and Physiology Lab features multiple human skeletons, full as well as disarticulated, and one real human skeleton. It also features five full-sized muscular torso models, as well as arm and leg models for studying the muscles. The nervous system and special senses are represented by various models, including brain models, eye and ear models, and three-dimensional nervous system boards displaying the major body nerves.

Biology Lab

The Biology Laboratory located in the Campus Center Building was established in 2007 to implement, facilitate, and support the needs of teaching and research in general biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, histology and genetics. It carries out teaching and research into the mechanisms underlying basic and applied biochemical concepts and techniques designed for all health care professionals. The laboratory is capable of performing the following tests: polymerase chain reaction, macromolecule blotting (northern, southern, and western), cell culture, electrophoresis (agarose and polyacrylamide), cell fractioning, expression cloning, ELISA tests, light microscopy, dark-field microscopy, inverted microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, colorimetric tests, centrifugation, chemicals and solution preparation, and experimental statistics.

Birthing Suite - AHU Simulation Center

Simulation in the Obstetrics area has been a welcome addition to our clinical experiences. Students learn to apply theory in the prenatal, labor & delivery, postpartum or newborn settings. Students are exposed to patient situations that most likely would not be available to them in the clinical settings. It is a safe place for students to learn and grow as they apply their nursing knowledge.

The Campus Center building is the heart of ADU. In the lobby, you'll find our Welcome Center, which is where you'll check in if you come to visit. You'll also find the our Registrar's office, as well as the entrance to our campus bookstore and NESS Cafe, our campus eatery.

The chapel on campus is a place of quiet solitude. Students, staff and faculty retreat there from time to time to reflect, pray and simply become still. Scripture says, “Be still and know that I am God.” AHU is a faith based institution. It is of no surprise then, when one visits the chapel, to see displayed three powerful objects of that faith. On the wall facing west one will see pictures depicting the creation motif. We are not just accidents but designed with care and great intentionality from a powerful and loving God. At the front hanging on the wall behind the piano is a picture of the Ten Commandments given by our God to enhance the quality of our life. To the right of that picture and designed within the fabric of the chapel walls themselves is the Cross. It embodies the core of our faith. It is a rich symbol of the love of God for all people as well as a challenge for us to embrace each other.

Chemistry Lab

The Chemistry laboratory is where theory meets practice by the hands-on implementation of what is learned in general and organic chemistry. Our Laboratory has modern-day instruments for physical chemical analysis including titrations, potentiometric studies, thermochemistry as well as absorption spectroscopy. The laboratory is equipped for research with automated GC/MS instruments and IR spectrometer and prepares our graduates for further studies in healthcare courses.

Microbiology Lab

The Microbiology laboratory is equipped for students to study the principles of microbiology, disinfection, sterilization, elementary immunology and microorganisms. We also emphasize their relationship to health and disease and test many commercial products for their ability to eliminate microbes and provide sanitary environments.

The campus eatery, named using the first letter of the University’s four vision words—Nurture, Excellence, Spirituality, and Stewardship—is a great place to study, eat, or hang out. The daily menu includes popular breakfast and lunch options for a quick bite or studying sustenance. A café patio is available right outside of the café that looks over the beautiful Lake Estelle.

Nuclear Medicine Lab

The Nuclear Medicine lab uses high-quality equipment, such as a gamma camera, uptake probes, survey meters, dose calibrators, and a computer workstation. Here, students practice IV setups, injections, well counting statistics, and vital signs prior to their clinical education.

Nurse Anesthesia Operating Room Simulation

Our new simulation lab has the ability to simulate state-of-the-art operating room procedures that you would find in the newest operating rooms at Florida Hospital South. Our virtual simulators are called Human Patient Simulator (HPS). They have human-like physiology with exceptional lung mechanics, gas exchange, pharmacological response and the ability to interface with patient monitors. In reality, both the adult and the pediatric simulators are physiologically capable of doing what a human being could do, except for getting up and walking away. The anesthesia delivery system allows their lungs to inhale or exhale anesthetic gasses, and the lungs respond automatically to mechanical ventilation. We can also physically administer the same medications we use during anesthesia practice and they are able to respond physiologically to the effects that these drugs would have on patients. The simulators are operated with an easy-to-use Müse interface, which features a myriad of Simulated Clinical Experiences (SCEs) for anesthesia, obstetrics, allied health, and advanced cardiac life support. This interface also allows the operator to create complications, and to cause improvements or worsen the case "on the fly" according to the desired learning outcomes. The acquisition of these simulators was made possible through a federal grant from the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). Also, the complete renovation and expansion of the OR simulation was made possible thanks to Dr. Greenlaw, former president of Adventist University of Health Sciences (ADU), ADU’s board of trustees, the Nurse Anesthesia Department at ADU and Florida Hospital.

The Nurse Anesthesia Skills lab is where our students can practice essential skills necessary for becoming Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

Nursing Learning Center

The Nursing Learning Center (NLC) provides a state-of –the-art learning environment designed to provide students with an atmosphere where they can incorporate theory and psychomotor skills consistent with curriculum requirements. The NLC consists of three large labs that allow up to a total of 60 students to use the setting simultaneously. In addition, in two of the large rooms there is a private patient care unit/bed/room with sink and cupboards.

The NLC is equipped with appropriate equipment and supplies that a nurse would require to provide patient care in an acute clinical setting. There are 19 patient care units/beds and 2 cribs for demonstrations, student practice and competency testing. Medium fidelity adult simulators with audible breath sounds, heart sounds and electrocardiogram, bowel sounds, blood pressure are used in assessment and management of the patient in a simulated the clinical environment. Each patient care unit is furnished with a wall-mounted sphygmomanometer, in-wall suction, compressed air (“oxygen”), mounted disposable glove box, sharps disposal container, an intravenous fluids suspension track, a bedside nightstand, and an over-bed table.

There are two storage rooms containing floor to ceiling shelves, cupboards and a small work surface. The storage rooms are used to store assorted mannequins parts, anatomical models, equipment for physical examinations and other supplies. Students may access supplies for practicing skills in “cubby holes” near the front entrance to each side of the NLC.

Physical Therapy Classroom/Lab

The Physical Therapy Classroom/Lab was designed to accommodate the need to transition from lecture hall to lab immediately in order to allow the students to practice the hands-on techniques that will be vital to their future practice as physical therapists.

Physical Therapy Skills Lab

The Physical Therapy Skills Lab is loaded with brand new therapeutic exercise, biophysical agent, gait, and balance equipment. There is significant room to move, as is required for the practice of physical therapy.

Physician Assistant Lab

The PA lab is a 990 sq/ft space consisting of 11 fully outfitted patient examination bays. Each bay is fashioned after a real clinical exam room to give a realistic feel to the learning experience. Students will practice taking patient histories, performing physical examinations and learning clinical procedures in the lab.

Physics Lab

Our physics lab centers on the concept of the week: a hands-on setting where students see the word problems they are doing in lecture class are actually physics experiments! In our lab we use ramps and spheres to determine the effects of friction, the results of inelastic collisions, and projectile motion. Optic benches are used to calculate the lens maker equation and see the differences between virtual and real images. Physics comes alive when we see interference of light and calculate the wavelengths of visible light. Physical Constants are discovered using pendulums to calculate the gravitational acceleration and LEDs to calculate Planck’s constant. Using bread boards, we analyze the laws of circuitry and discover the difference between parallel circuits and series circuits.

R. A. Williams Library

The R. A. Williams Library, located on the first and second floor of the General Education Building, is the campus hub to collaborate with librarians, instructors, and peers in learning the skills to succeed in academic research. Students gain expertise to find, evaluate, synthesize, create, and publish knowledge.

Even though most library books, articles, and videos may be accessed electronically off-campus, there are many reasons to visit the campus library. The Library offers quiet space for individual work, collaborative areas for groups, and space for consultations with library instructors. Whether it is to check out a Course Reserve item, use anatomical models, work on an interactive whiteboard, or access photocopy, scanning, or printing services, the Library has the resources needed for student success.

Radiography Lab

Our radiography lab features one fully energized x-ray suite consisting of an x-ray table, an x-ray tube, a fluoroscopic unit, upright x-ray imaging stand and associated control panel. We also have one non-energized x-ray suite consisting of an x-ray table, an x-ray tube, upright x-ray imaging stand and associated control panel.

The lab also includes two 42-inch monitors; which are used for laboratory demonstration, critical thinking/image critique, and are connected to Florida Hospital with capabilities to demonstrate current “real” cases. Students also have two anatomical skeletons, and various accessories to assist them in learning the proper methods of producing quality radiographs.

Sonography Lab - Orlando Campus

In the Sonography Lab, there are a variety of ultrasound machines, ranging from laptops to ergonomic machines used in today’s real-world settings. With multiple transducers, ergonomic chairs for all machines, and easy-to-move stretchers, the lab has all the equipment and accessories needed to perform an assortment of exams.

The lab uses sonography phantoms that mimic human anatomy, scanning bolsters to promote ergonomic scanning, and multiple anatomical models for the most realistic demonstrations. We also have two computer workstations in the lab with review information to assist students with studying.
