Pinning Ceremony
Symbolism of the Nursing Pin
The Pinning Ceremony may be described as an "Entrance into Practice Ceremony". It is a symbolic tradition and a rite of passage into the nursing profession. The pinning of nurses, which dates back to the 12th century, originally served as a way to distinguish those who cared for the sick and wounded with a commitment to service and compassionate care. Today's nursing pin upholds these values, represents nursing excellence, and signifies the successful completion of the nursing program. Pinning at AHU reminds nursing graduates of their call to live the healing values of Christ through whole person care as they enter professional nursing practice.
